One step closer to a bikable WS

One step closer to a bikable WS

That’s what we’ll be once the Winston-Salem Bicycle Master Plan is finalized and adopted by City Council.

If you recall, we started talking about the new master plan back in February 2018. There have been several public input sessions, online surveys, lots of analysis and… well, planning, and now the draft plan is finally ready for public consumption.

Winston-Salem Bicycle Master Plan 2019

This is a beefy plan, 246 pages in all. It’s comprehensive and diverse, and that’s what we need. It’s been 14 years since our Bicycle Master Plan was created and a lot has changed since then. There are lots of new ways to engineer our streets to accommodate biking and walking, like cycle tracks, intersection markings, bicycle boulevards. We  see more and more examples of effective policy, education programs , and quick and cheap ways to test new things. And the general public’s appetite for biking as a means of transportation and recreation has increased. Not to mention, Winston-Salem has grown and changed considerably in the last decade.

All that to say, I hope Winston-Salem is finally ready to move in a more multi-modal, people friendly (not just car friendly) direction. The new Bicycle Master Plan should help us do that.

Now is the time for us, the public, to review the plan and make sure it does, in fact, lead us in the direction we want to go as a city.

We have a few more weeks to weigh in on the plan and I hope you will take a few minutes TODAY to review the Interactive Map, peek at the draft plan, and take the latest survey to share your thoughts – good or bad. And don’t hesitate to contact your Council Member to let them know what you think!

If you want Winston-Salem to embrace biking, making it safer and easier for anyone who wants to ride, please take some time to get familiar with the plan and provide some input.

Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks.
